by John C. Hulsman

30 November 2021

In this paper we discuss:

  1. How party members are able to detect the rival party’s shortcomings, but much less dissect their own party’s outstanding issues. We call this “Hemingway’s Trap.”
  2. The issues affecting the Democratic Party, which risk costing the party the control of Congress in 2022;
  3. In particular, not getting credit for the recent approval of large spending plans;
  4. The issues affecting the Republican Party, which risk costing the party the presidential race of 2024;
  5. In particular, remaining hostage of Trumpism;
  6. What the parties should do to overcome their respective "Hemingway's Traps".
