The Coup Epidemic in the Sahel and West Africa

In this paper we discuss:
- The African "epidemic of coups" in Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, and Niger;
- The regional issues that have created fertile ground for these juntas to take power;
- How civilian-led governments lost the confidence of wide segments of the populations, thus contributing to the local support for these coups;
- The differences existing among the various coups, each of them with some unique attributes; and
- How the growing tensions between the West and Russia have impacted the geopolitical landscape in Africa’s “coup belt.”
